A Guide to Sacca San Mattia, the Abandoned Island of Murano, Venice
2013
Short description / This guide is both an invitation to get to know Sacca San Mattia before it is developed and a look at some of the possible plans for its future development. One of the seven islands that make up Murano, Sacca San Mattia is situated in the lagoon just north of Venice. Once used by the Murano glass industry to stock leftovers, it is now a vast abandoned landfill composed of rubble from the glass industry, construction debris, and matter dredged out of the lagoon. The largest undeveloped space in greater Venice, the island has prompted all sorts of extraordinary plans.
